Is it ok to wash my dog thoroghly before i use the frontline flea control on him?

Is it ok to wash my dog thoroghly before i use the frontline flea control on him?
Only reason i ask is because his fleas are so bad that i want to wash him first to get majority off. Is it going to affect frontlines efficiency if i do this??
